SELF PORTRAIT
TITLE: Hidden feelings
SIZE: 91.44 x 91.44 cm DECEMBER 2015 EXHIBITION TEXT: I created this piece by using acrylic paintings, a canvas, a photo (that is mine), with the different type of information that I research to make my piece better and the two inspiration that I got from the different art movements (nevoueau and folk) that inspired me to make my art piece to transmit my inner emotions and thoughts through the whole piece. |
ARTIST INSPIRATION
The artist that I was inspired by was Alphose Mucha, an artist that work with Lithography but also that apply art Nouveau into his collection of art work. Also his different kinds of designs, painting, illustrations, advertisements, postcards and designs make me be more inspired by all of his art work. The things that I got more inspired by were how detail Alphose Mucha develop and create into all of his pieces. In addition, how his unique style became know as the art Nouveau. Alphose Mucha way of matching and putting color into all of his work make me inspired to put into my painting different kinds of color into my piece because I think that it outs a lot of more life into the painting, Also how he added different types of flower designs into his work (that for me) that shows a completely different perspective about how we see art.
ART MOVEMENT INSPIRATION
ART NEVOUEAU
I was inspired by the this art movement because of the detail that each of the pieces that art nevoueau has. Also each art work has a grate amount of detail in each part of it and the mixture and the blending of colors has a really classic look in each of t the pieces. The flowers that were created around the person that is drawn in the piece makes it more interesting for the viewer to see it. At the same time, the flowers had a lot of detail that I wanted to make into my art piece, as how some of the flowers are in the hair, the sides, and around the body itself. In addition to it, most of the art nevoueau pieces that are in this art movement have a message to transmit and make it people feel at the same time alive with all the type of colors and the color mixtures, and the detail around the whole piece.

FOLK ART
I was inspired by this art movement, because of the way many type of artist were part of this movement and the only thing that they wanted is to create art and transmit their thoughts, ideas, and emotion through their art, but without the knowledge of dimensions in their different art works. With all this type of characteristics I was inspired because the only thing that I wanted do in my piece was to paint and to transmit my inner thoughts and emotions, but also with the problem of dimensions that were the type of characteristics from this type of art movement.

CULTURE INSPIRATION
Cultural Emotion Expressions
I was inspired by the cultural emotion expression because of how our emotions are sometimes a culture itself, because of the way we express our self's and how does it related to a grate variety of people with most of the same thoughts, ideas, and point of view. However the cultural emotion expression is also not express as much because many people are afraid or they really can't express the emotions as well as their feelings, so I thought of this culture as my culture inspirations because of how this type of culture seem to be hiding they way their emotions are and to express their identity as they wanted to, but without being able to express them is hard to be understood or being the person that is unable of transmit their emotions and thoughts of who they are and what is hid in those emotions.

MATERIALS
THE PHOTO THAT I USED FOR MY SELF
PORTRAIT
This was the picture that I use as
an example to follow on my portrait, from the photo I took
some parts but not all of them
( this picture is my own).
PROCESS
1. I took four stretcher of (91.44 cm) and put them together
2. I took the stapler and staple the four edges of the stretcher
3. Later I took the raw cotton and placed on the and expand the role and place the stretcher on the top and cut ( the raw cotton) it around (stretcher) it
4. With an stapler staple the sides of the stretcher with the raw cotton around it and make sure the raw cotton is not loose
5. Then I took a hammer to introduce more the staples on the canvas to secure it more
6. Later I apply the gesso on the whole canvas to make sure is really strong to then start painting
7. I wait for the canvas to dry and then is ready to paint on it.
8. Later I took green and brown acrylic paint and I pain the background
9. After I painted the background I used a projector that help to sketch the picture that I was kind of basing my portrait of
10. Then with the sketch that I had already on the canvas, I use red acrylic painting and then I use black acrylic painting to create and put detail in the dress. ( I was using a thin and a little bit more bigger brush to make it)
11. The after finish the dress, I was going to develop the face, I mix white, yellow, brown, and a little bit of red to make the skin color
12. Later I use a thin brush to outline where the face was going to be, and as well the neck and shoulder too
13. Then I was applying the acrylic (skin color) to those parts and leaving the space for the mouth, nose, eyes, and where the hair was going to go in the shoulders and developing the arms (with some irregularities)
14. Later I was focusing on the hair, so I mix yellow, red and blue to make a dark brown for the base of the hair
15. The I made a more orange brown and I apply it to the hair (but it was to red), so then to the more darker brown I use it with a little bit or white to added to those parts and then the hair had a better shape (in my opinion), with a kind of move feeling into it
16. Then I started developing the flowers on the hair, I was applying and mixing color. as red, blue. yellow, violet, pink, orange, and white but also I was mixing them up in the different flowers,
17. In each of the flowers I was trying to make a lot of detail to make them seem kind of realistic and I use a thin brush to make them
18. After I finish on the flowers (in the hair), I use white acrylic painting to make the different types of designs around the person (me) that I was making to make sure it had connections with the art nevoueau
19.Then I took blue acrylic paint and with a thin brush I outline around the design that was on the top
20. Later I mix orange, red, and a little bit of wait to make the flowers around the head
21. After finishing painting the flowers and allowing the painting to dry I took orange acrylic paint and use it to create detail on the flowers, and then I use white to create kind of a highlight on the flowers around the head as well
22. The I went to the face again and I began the process to creating the eyes, ( at this part I was searching tutorials of how to mix the different color to make the eyes and the form of it because I wanted to make them kind of realistic)
23. First I mix blue and white to color inside of the eye and then I made kind of a pink color to put it on the edge were the eyes is close to the nose and later I kind of blend all of the colors together in the middle
24. Later I mix a really light brown and a little bit of yellow to paint the eye
25. Then to the top part of the eye, I add a dark brown and then in the middle I mix both colors
26. Later I mix up a light brown and I did the lines around the eyes to differentiate the types of browns around it
27 . The I added white to the middle part of the eye that I mix before the light blue and the pink
28. Then I added black to the little circle between the medium brown circle of the eye ( the pupil)
29. The I added white to the brown part of the eye to make sure the eye had kind of a highlight on it
30. Then I did the same exactly process on the left eye
31. For the nose ( I research and watch tutorials that help me out to develop the nose_
32. I mix up the same color that I did with the face ( white, yellow, brown, and a little bit of red), but instead, I separated the paint and one I made it kind of darker and the other one as a highlight for the nose
33. With the two skin paintings I was developing the form of the nose by using a thin brush and the a little bit more bigger brush to color it and the again the thinner brush to make the details in the nose
34. Later I research for the mouth ( I look tutorials, and the different shapes of the mouth)
35. Then I use kind of a dark skin color from what I use to make the nose and outline the form of the mouth
36. Later I mix up a red, orange, a white acrylic painting to make the color that I wanted to kind of see in the lips of the mouth
37. I use a darker green to color the inner space on the designs that I made and around the edge of the person (me)
2. I took the stapler and staple the four edges of the stretcher
3. Later I took the raw cotton and placed on the and expand the role and place the stretcher on the top and cut ( the raw cotton) it around (stretcher) it

CHALLENGES AND ADVANTAGES
CHALLENGES:
The challenges that I face while I was doing the portrait were kind of a lot because it was my first time doing such a big painting. The first challenge was coming with the idea of what to do and what to create on the canvas. Also the time when I creating and stretching the canvas was really hard because I needed to repeat the process three times, it was challenging because the stapler that I was using to grab the cloth of the canvas has kind of hard to manage to work. Other type of challenge that I face was creating the same painting for the background because it was green that I have mix up with other type of colors and I just made I a little to cover up most of it but it didn't got to all of the canvas. Also when I need to sketch the photo from the projector was kind of hard to see it on the canvas and when it came to create the dress was kind of hard to think on the details that I going to add and develop in the dress. Other type of challenge was when I was making the hair, first I made the color to red and too bright from what original I have it and then the other type of challenge that I face was while I was developing the paintings that painting the canvas, it was challenging because while I was working with the acrylic paintings they would dry really fast and I needed to start creating the same painting all over again. Another challenge that I face was when I was when I was doing the eyes because I needed to do research of how to develop the type of colors, the shape, ,and the details that the eyes needed to have because I wanted to make them kind of realistic. Also the nose was very challenging to me to develop because of the different types of colors that I needed to use to make the shadows and the bright parts of the nose and the mouth was pretty challenging to me as well because I could not develop a color that I like to see on them and also the shape and the size of them were kind of challenging to make. |
ADVANTAGES:
The advantages that I face were not as much but the advantages were able to make me feel better about the piece and how I was creating it. One of the advantages that I face during the development of the piece was coming up with the sketches, with this piece I really inspired by Alphonse Mucha piece that give me a lot of ideas and let me develop different type of designs that I was able to add to my art work. Other advantages that I face was creating the detail on the dress and I really like them how they end up looking. Also when I was developing the shape of the face and when I was painting it was kind of an advantage for me because I was able to get the shape that I wanted the face to have and when I was painting the face it was easy to get all the color face done. Another advantage that I had on the process of making the piece was when I was making the colors of the flowers in the hair and the details in them, as well as the color mixing of them and what color put in each of them. Also when I was making the details on the eyes ( the part of the portrait that I like more) was a advantage for me because I was able to develop grate detail on them. Also another type of advantage was the designs that I was able to develop base on mine inspirations in Alphonse Mucha, the designs around the canvas and around the person (myself) were good because I was demonstrating part of the art nevoueau, and also that i could related to another type of art movement , as the folk art because I base the shapes of some of the parts from the portrait. |
THE MEANING BEHIND MY PIECE
The meaning of my piece is how sometimes were are unable to express or demonstrate our inner emotions and thoughts that we
have inside. Sometimes were are to scare of just spread it out of us and tell the world many of the things that we as people normally
think and feel, but for us, is more easier just to hide them really deep into us and go on with our lives with those emotions and thoughts that are kind of hurtful but we are unable just to speak up for them and at the same times for our own selves. So what I wanted to transmit through my art work is how sometimes I would take those kind of emotion, feeling and thoughts and I am not able to express them to talk about them with someone because I am not that just to it, and by how the years have going hiding them is better than speaking about them because is a way to not being to focus in the sadness time or in the things that I didn't want it to remember because many of them are just memories that we keep inside of us. The piece is just how we normally hide our inner emotions, feeling and point of the things that happen around us to just keep going with our live.

REFLECTION
Base on the research, comments, and advises over the process of making mine art piece were the key to complete the my self portrait. As the comments that I receive from my art teacher Mr. Chat, on the shapes, the colors and the dimensions of the body as the dimension of the arms and the torso. Also the colors on the face and in the hair, and the way the shape of the mouth needed to be as well as the sheathing of the face. In addition, the advises that my mom also told me to add and fix on my art piece, as the eyes, the mouth, and the nose, but also the way some of the designs around the person (me) were going and how they would look. The research that I made on the eyes, the nose, and the mouth that were really helpful for me to understand better how to apply, mix the colors, shade, and develop the figures of shapes in the face. The colors around the whole piece (in my opinion), were a good match and the colors did the piece more brighter and stand out. Also the eyes (in my opinion) were kind of realistic and how they transmit a message through them while the viewer sees them. In addition, on this piece, I also was connecting it to my theory of knowledge class because of the way, I was learning about emotions and how did they work throughout our daily activities and what things do we mostly go through. So through those kind of things I did get to finish my way out to complete my self portrait.
