MIAD - PROJECT
TITLE: Night and Day
SIZE: 30.48 CM X 19.05 CM MEDIUM: Wood, foam, plastic, found objects APRIL 2016 EXHIBITION TEXT: I develop this piece by being inspired by architects I.M Pei and Santiago Calatrava which drag me to inspired me through cubism and symbolism which involve me to create my piece. Which has connections with the city of Milwaukee and at the same time it was my own view of this city, in the night. By this this sculpture, applies its meaning to the mysterious but also to the different ways that the city can be seen during the day and the night. |
ARTIST INSPIRATION
Calatrava is known for his flowing, curved buildings. He uses steel, concrete, and new computer modeling to create compositions that appear at once natural and structurally impossible. His designs suggest stylized natural objects—waves, wings, or sun-bleached skeletons, with rows of white concrete ribs curved into distorted parabolic arches. At the same time, I was inspired by I.M Pei which include many types of forms, styles, lines and figures that makes interested the viewer that sees it. Also by how he put his imagination into his projects and combine his ideas which makes his works totally fascinating. So at the end I use both of this artist/architects because they inspired me by how they use different types of techniques which make simple things look great and unique to the rest of the world.
ART MOVEMENT INSPIRATION
CUBISM
This art movement was part of my inspiration to develop the sculpture because of how this movement brakes objects apart and develops different figures that are spread through each part of the canvas, that makes it kind of a collage. So I took this idea, so I could develop the city as part of the cubism movement, as the gesso board was kind of my canvas. |
SYMBOLISM
I use this art movement because I thought that the piece had symbolism behind each of the pieces that I was able to put on the gesso board. Also how this art movement is able to reflect of the meaning behind the artist perspectives and that is base of imagination, ideas, and dreams, that makes each of the art works unique and different from each other. In addition, the fantasy that each piece is able to pass to each viewer in a different type of way and the perspective that is able to develop in each person. |
ARTWORK INSPIRATION
CULTURE INSPIRATION
MILWAUKEE (AT NIGHT)
I use the Milwaukee culture (but at night), I used because at night Milwaukee is completely different from what it was in the morning and the night in the city changes out own perspective of how we view it. Also, what can of changes does the night of the city brings to us, as being part of that culture and the city itself as well. However, the night culture does some changes to the Milwaukee culture itself, it kinds of make it just one. Also a second reason, is because of what I also specked it to see in in my sculpture as a whole to demonstrate my point of view, and the meaning behind while I was crating and putting together the blocks to make the city. |
MATERIALS
SKETCHES
PROCESS
- I made line and structural sketches of the lines in the board and the structure of the city too.
- I choose the pieces that I wanted to use in the sculpture.
- I cut them and smooth them down.
- By smoothing them down I was able to give each of the blocks a different type of shape, so they would be different from each other.
- I first organize the blocks as I wanted and then I paste them with hot glue.
- I was able to get a pair of fake flowers, so I cut them in pieces and I made a little garden with some small blocks that I had.
- Because some of the pieces felt of, I was able to do apply other ideas that I had in mind and It went well with the rest of the pieces that I already had on the board.
CHALLENGES AND ADVANTAGES
CHALLENGES:
The challenges that I face throughout the process of elaboration of the piece were, first how I need to have a line design, that need it to have only four lines that got one space were the light would go through and light up the city and at the same time a 90 degrees angle. A second challenge that I face was cutting down the pieces that I had to put and organize, all around the gesso board. Another challenge was cutting the wood blocks and cutting thin pieces of foam or other material which were very delicate to the cutters that I was using to cut them down. Also by how to almost each piece that I need it to use, I need it to smooth down the edges because there were some part that had their edges with little pieces sticking out that make it hard to paste on the gesso board. In addition, having an exactly idea of how I wanted to arrange and develop the order that I wanted the figures, blocks, and other materials go in the gesso was kind of hard, because I didn't know were to begin with and elaborate a design which give me a better view of the city that I wanted to represent. |
ADVANTAGES:
The advantages that I went through the creation of the sculpture were, elaborating sketches that had different types of perspectives that I had in mind, of what might the city that I wanted to recreate need it to have or something that might apply to it as well. Also how I was able to get different types of pieces, which I was able to elaborate the sculpture. Smoothing out the edges of the blocks that I was using, was one of the easiest parts of putting together the piece, because by smoothing it, I was giving a different type of form and view to the blocks. Also by taking a fake representation of a type of flower, I was able to make a little garden in the city (sculpture) that represented the green areas that are found in the city. When I was almost at the end of pasting most of the pieces in the gesso board, I was able to make so changes that I had in mind, after some of the pieces fall down of the board. Also by how I was able to make most of the pieces in the board light up, base on how I was able to arrange it, so everything would look kind of as a city and had a patter and the figures were making unique shadows by the way the light was getting through them. |
THE MEANING BEHIND MY PIECE
The meaning behind my piece, is that when I was doing it there were parts were the light could not go and made those spaces dark, but at the same time there were places were the light reach out and those places light up. Also how I incorporated black and white figures in my piece. This type of things made me think about its meaning, but also the rest of the figures. So at the end I think that the meaning of my piece, is our perspective when we see the city in the morning, when the sun is out and all the things light up. At this time, were are able to see the city colorful, happy and that each thing has kind of a pattern. However, at night the perspective of the city changes. This is because we see the city as mysterious, interesting and creates curiosity in our self's, on what the night in the city has that is so interesting to us? So I think that is my meaning of my piece, the different types of view of the city in the light and the city at night.
REFLECTION
Throughout the whole process of making the sculpture, it was very interesting how from a simple piece of cardboard or wood blocks, many forms, figures, and a whole "city" would come out of it. This project was a little bit challenging, at first I thought that it was going to be an easy assignment, but it began to be more than that, because my imagination and ideas were piling up and at the same time mixing up. So there were many ways that I wanted to created, but there wasn't an specific beginning for me to start. However, when I put the first piece, and hearing and seeing great examples of architects of their artworks as Santiago Calatrava and I.M Pei were a really big help. By Mr.Chat cutting the board and my dad helping me out cutting the pieces that I wasn't able to cut, because they were too hard to cut, I finally got to the point were I got all the pieces that I wanted and needed. Then I began putting together on the board and then I paste them. I think it was very helpful the examples that were broad to class and the comments from other on my piece because they made me think of new perspectives and ideas to improve it in the future.
