Project # 3
TITLE: Phases of la Luna
MEDIUM: Acrylic on canvas SIZE: 45 cm x 100 cm OCTOBER 2016 EXHIBIT TEXT: By being inspired by Monet and his impressionism techniques, I was able to connected with the Muisca culture and demonstrate the hidden meaning of change in the different aspects throughout our lives, that make us who we are. |
ARTIST INSPIRATION
Throughout the development of this art piece I was inspired by many of the things such as nature, space, Muisca culture. The artist that I was inspired by is Claude Monet, by his rough and smooth brush strokes in his different art pieces. At the same time Monet's techniques of using shadows and highlights throughout the different types of landscapes which contain far away and close up objects which magnified the effect of how Monet uses light to add his unique effect in each of his artworks. Also how Monet does not use individual strokes to create his pieces, instead he uses many variations of brush strokes all together. As short and long brush strokes that later are being faded into the background and gives the piece a more impressionistic style and look, to create a greater value and context towards the color variation throughout each piece as a whole.
ART MOVEMENT INSPIRATION
Impressionism
I wanted to apply the impressionism art movement to this particular art piece, by how I wanted to emphasize the many challenges that people face throughout their lives and which are the ones that make them in the person that they are. So by this, I wanted to show and use the different types of techniques that would make the art piece seem more impressionistic to the viewer eye. With this I was able to be particularly be inspired by Claude Monet which is a very interesting artist while doing impressionistic portraits of his surroundings and the things that surround us, like flowers and a diverse variety of landscapes. At the end by trying to portrait Monet's style the piece that I was elaborating, I was able to finish it with all of this significant by being focus on the outstanding messages from the techniques use for its development and show the value of color and usage of different brush strokes. |
ARTWORK INSPIRATION
CULTURE INSPIRATION
Muisca Culture
I was inspired by the Muisca culture because of how they had different gods, which were found either on the moon, the sun, and even the earth. The Muisca culture, would have different gods base on the phases of the moon, and one of them was "La Guatavita" which was kind of a princess which they adore. Base on this I was inspired by the phases of the moon and how I could related towards now society as a whole, like in our believes, thoughts, ideas, and the point of view that we have about the world. |
PLANNING
I began my project by sketching the moon in different types of styles, which I did with different types of colors shading, adding shadows and highlights, and a different shape into it. Also with the different phases of the moon, I try to experiment with a diverse type of colors around it to see how the colors collide with each other and my mixing up together, it would get me a different type of perspective that I wanted to show and how other people would view it depending of the colors that I would choose to show it. Therefore, by all of this I was able to plan all the phases of the moon that I wanted to use and the variation of colors and highlights that I wanted to portrait throughout my final piece. That would emphasize the meaning behind my piece throughout all of this type of experimentations.
|
After planning in my sketchbook what I wanted to do, I develop the different range of colors of the blue's, grey's, and white's which I would use to elaborate each of the four small canvases. Also while I had the different shades of blue on the canvas I did the shade of the moon multiple times because either it was to small or not round and sharp enough on the edges so at this point I redo most of what I did before until that part, all around the moon.
|
PROCESS
By sketching all of my ideas of my sketch book and planning and experimenting with the colors and shapes, I was able to create a changeable object, which was the moon. Then I use black acrylic painting to elaborate the background for all of the canvases that I was going to use. Later I elaborated different shades of blue acrylic painting and put them over the center of all the canvases.
|
I add first the more darker blue that I had and then I was adding a more lighter blue color each time. While I was doing this I was using rough and smooth brush strokes and at the same time long and short as well to create a more balance background and mix up all the blue's together. Then I would draw the shape of the moon on top of the dry painting and then outline it with white and grey acrylic painting. After that I would paint the inside of the moon with a really light blue and then take the dark blue acrylic color and put it in the different areas of them moon to make the shadows and a little bit of texture on it. Then I would add the other shades of blue paint and added to the moon to make highlights into the moon. After that I would take a more smaller brush and put white painting on the edge of it and then move it all around the canvas with fast movements to develop a look of something similar to the stars.

CHALLENGES AND ADVANTAGES
CHALLENGES:
The challenges that I was going through throughout the development of this art work were various, but at the same time, I was able to change them or create a similar ones for my art work. The first challenge that I face, while developing this artwork was elaborating a pattern of some type of object, that would have different types of phases, and that would change through time and that also had cold colors or very light colors, which I wanted to use for this art piece. This was kind of hard because I really didn't have anything in mind towards what I wanted to demonstrate through that type of change, on the four little canvases. Also another challenge that I encounter while elaborating this piece, was when I needed to choose the different types of colors that I wanted add to the piece, and how I was going to blend them together to get a pretty accurate colors that would resemble the night sky. At the same time, another challenge that came from this was when I was drawing the different phases of the moon in the canvases and the colors that I would need to add to resemble the moon. Therefore, the different types of techniques that I use were kind of difficult to develop because I had to repeated more than three times to had it done the way I wanted to be. Also for the first canvas that I made I had to kind of redo it because while I was applying the different tones of colors and the different types of textures that I wanted to elaborate to the art piece, it was hard because the painting wasn't dry get, so to develop the changes and to add the other colors to it it needed to be dry, but it took kind of a long time. |
ADVANTAGES:
The advantages that I face through the development were all from the last details or changes I had to do towards my art piece. One of the first advantages that I had was the size of the moon in each of the canvases which was very big, it was i the center of the canvas, and it also had a good figure, which demonstrated the figure of the moon. Also, another advantage was the mix of the colors that I wanted to use, all the different shades of blue, and how I was able to blend them together and highlight some of the "sky" part of particular parts throughout the piece as a whole. Another advantage was demonstrating and creating brightness around each moon figure, which on my perspective was kind of successful because it highlighted the moon and made it more realistic in some kind of way. In addition, another advantage was the really bright blue that I made with strong brushstrokes around the moon to make it more brighter and develop more a nigh sky looking part around the moon. A final advantage, was when I develop the stars, which I created them by taking white painting and taking a a brush and applying a small amount on the edge of the brush and just splattered paint all around, which make it resemble more to the nigh sky. |
THE MEANING BEHIND MY PIECE
The meaning behind my piece is how things in our daily lives change and challenges us throughout our lives, and how at the end makes us who we are today.
REFLECTION
Throughout all of the time that I spend planning this project and how I was going to do it, I question myself about many things as the colors that I was going to use and at the same time the different types of techniques that I was going to choose to use in this artwork. Also, base on the research I was able to be more inspired and create a stronger meaning for me and the viewer itself, and how they can relate to what I want to express wit what I have done throughout the way I use the brush, the color, the techniques, and my own inspirations to create this art piece. In addition, some comments and ideas from people around me help me to improve more my own ideas towards this project.

ACT QUESTIONS
1. The relationship between my inspirations and my artwork, were the demonstration of the challenges and changes of a person as a whole, which are were being elaborated through each part of the piece. Which affect my piece to be more created with some kind of the challenges life creates all around us, as how Claude Monet does on his artwork.
2. The overall point of view by the authors from the elaborated research, were that they were trying to reflect on the challenges that shape us and makes a person stronger everyday. Which later they would give a more meaningful meaning, that would have different types of point of view depending on the things as the emotions feelings and the characteristics that each of the people want just to keep near them. So by it, regarding my inspiration, it shows how life changes develop either aggressive or clam changes that reflect on the kind of person we grow to be one day.
3. The generalizations and conclusions that I discovered were, that people try to change themselves because either they want to become a better person or life has taught things that has change them drastically. Also by analyzing the inspirations that I choose, the ideas of changes depends of how people view it and apply it in their life and show it to the world, as Claude Monet paintings. He shows it through his own culture and views of the world.
4. My central idea for my inspirational research was the phases of the moon, because I wanted to show how changes have a great impact into our true self and the way we want to be seen. Also that how my main idea give me the interest to research about the changes in things and the connection that they have with the world as a whole, which contains interesting and very creative ways that the world and the people change with them.
5. The conclusion that I reach base on reading the research that I elaborated for this project, was that behind each of the development, for each of the artworks made by the Monet, there was a connection between his work and mine, regarding what he wanted to show the world and wanted to express as well. In the research, I encounter information that was related the the artist, that were about his own inspirations, what he wanted to demonstrate, his point of view, and art movements. So I concluded that this artist illustration about a typical day in a life of a person and how significant the changes and the challenges can be to a person.
