PROJECT 2
TITLE: "Stories and memories"
MEDIUM: acrylic on canvas SIZE: 30.48 cm X 60.96 cm October 2016 Exhibit text: By being inspired by Picasso's symmetrical effect on his art work and Monaco's Gothic style, I was able to create a piece which would emphasize religion and and the beauty of nature and non-material things in our lives, with acrylic painting on canvas to emphasize the story telling of our lives in objects that are meaningful to us because they are part of our own story, our live. |
ARTIST INSPIRATION
Through the creation of this piece I was inspired by religion as culture, on which I was also base because of how I was inspired by the art that is demonstrated through the stained glass and the different types of designs that are able to see through those pieces and how they tell stories base on what they are portraying in them. The first artist that I was inspired by is Pablo Picasso, because of his usage of lines and cubism in his different types of art pieces. How Picasso, tells a story through the different art pieces, and as well how he incorporates the stories and the feelings of other people that have impacted his life, as well as events that had impacted his life too. In the other hand, his cubism usage in his work, was also an inspiration because of how he would highlight certain figures throughout the whole piece by outlining it in the piece. Also his abstract and non-understandable paintings were very inspirational for me as well because it I was able to incorporate to my piece abstract figures that would be a big part of the its meaning. The second artist that I was inspired by was Lorenzo Monaco, because of his usage of colors and how he would balance out the cold and warm colors throughout the painting. Also his different types of techniques that can be seen in his paintings, as creating the art works with tempera and the use of different brushes. How his brush stokes were really smooth throughout the painting to develop different kinds of looks as if they were painted in a scroll, as his paintings communicates different types of meanings and messages throughout the actions of the peoples in Monaco's paintings and his view about humanity and the world. Also by creating certain paintings during his life time he was able to tell a story, a story that has been part of this involvement of his culture, his language, his views, his religion, and perspectives of the world.
ART MOVEMENT INSPIRATION
CUBISM
I wanted to demonstrate through this piece the cubism art movement, to emphasize the particular view that I wanted to demonstrate of what is the art of stained glass. So, by this I wanted this art work to show on the particular areas of a stained glass piece, the viewer can see how cubism is highlighted, on the use of the different types of figures that are being use throughout the whole piece. At the same time, to illustrate the symmetrical and the non specific figure that is been given to the piece. Also how, the art work elaborates different types of perspectives within the viewers, and how the piece demonstrates a way that a story can be tell and be understand. |
GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM
I wanted to use and apply German expressionism on this particular art work. This is because of how in most or the stained glass works, the edges and around each of the figures that are being use for the development of a particular piece, as creating a landscape, a flower, or just a normal object, this would be surrounded by a black or grey metal to sustain the figures together. By this, each of the figures use in the art work, will be highlighted and how they are valuable to the elaboration of this art work. So by this I wanted to emphasize it with black painting surrounding certain areas on my own art work. |
ARTWORK INSPIRATION
INSPIRATION IDEA
STAINED GLASS
I was inspired by the different art works that can be found and develop through this glass technique. How this type of art emphasizes the usage of cold and warm colors throughout the pieces, and the rhythm that is being given by the mixing up of the colors throughout the piece. Also the symmetrical figures that are being elaborated through each one of the art works. At the same time, how the stained glass communicates different kinds of messages and stories throughout each particular picture, which can be from a time in history, from a time in someones life and from a religious view too. By this I was inspired because trough each window that contains stained glass it contains a unique form of story that have might change the world and shares a little bit from us to the whole world. |
CULTURE INSPIRATION
RELIGION
I choose religion as my culture for this project, this is because of how in many churches that I have seen they have stain glass in their windows, and most of them have certain images that are very significant to the story of the church. At the same time it highlights the certain religion the church is focusing on and how those particular figures in the stained glass has, which are telling the story of how that particular religion develop and began to grow throughout the people and the world as well. Also by this religion contains different types of perspectives that demonstrate the knowledge that is being share within the people of the same religion and with other people that don't pursuit the same kind of religion around the world. So by this, this culture in particular inspired me to elaborate this piece because religion is kind of telling a story, the story of our lives while believing or elaborating certain type of things that makes us who we are. |
PROCESS
At the beginning when I was just starting to elaborate the three ovals in the small canvas I was changing between different forms and sizes that I had in mind to create in the canvas. The second part was changing the background colors of the three ovals. which for the first one, at the beginning I had a much darker blue, but at the end I just mix it up with white color so, at the end I just apply it to the background I got a much brighter color to draw the little painting inside that I had in mind. The third part was examining the size of the lines that I was going to elaborate throughout the lines that were between and around the oval, so I would make a look a like of something close to a square. At the end I decided to go with the thinnest brush I had to make and at the same time I decided to go for the medium size lines around and between the ovals. Then I was applying the color to each square but I kind of went over the black lines that I just did and after I finish each of the squares I would go back and finish it by retouching it.
|
At the same time I was elaborating and applying the colors to the three oval figures and at the same time the colors throughout the squares around the oval. When I was putting the colors as the orange, the green, red, and violet colors on the first oval, but then on the second oval I apply orange, red, violet, a brighter green color, and a light yellow color as well. While I was outlining the green oval I know rest that the bright green colors didn't highlight as much, so I changed to a darker green color. Throughout the whole process of sketching at first so that I was going to be able to first change it in the canvas before painting it, and at the same time the mixing of colors to create a darker red, a brighter or a darker green to. On the little paintings inside the ovals I was using different types of techniques and at the same time different ways of brush strokes throughout the whole piece.
|
PLANING
For this art piece I was trying to create different types of colors that would highlight by being in a black color canvas. At the same time, the colors that I made sometimes weren't so bright or the dark color that I wanted to add to a particular part in the piece. Also the diverse kinds of designs, that were part of the painting as a whole. This was possible by the use of thin brushes and dark colors and some bright to emphasize their work throughout the piece. As for the acrylic paintings, I mix up different tones of green, which I mix with white, yellow, red, and blue to create different kinds of tones. In addition, I develop other colors as reds, oranges, browns, purples, to create different tones which would blend together.
|
For the planning part, when I was developing the piece, I was trying to incorporate and mix up colors around the edge of the circle. Also, while I was doing it for the first circle I added more orange squares around instead of more colors because on my view it look more balance, and for the second circle I was going for more green colors. At this point I was mixing up colors with green as well, but there was a point that I was adding and creating bright greens which at the end did not look good, so I change it to a darker green color to make sure it would blend and demonstrate a more balance color around the circle and the different color squares. So that it would also go with the little painting inside the circle as well.

SKETCHES
In the different types of sketches I wanted to emphasize the details of the objects that are being seeing most of the time in stained glass. At the same time, I wanted to show nature and the beauty that is behind every flower, sunset or a three. Also, I wanted to observe the little details that could made up the things that I wanted to demonstrate through each of the little "windows" that I was going to create in the canvas. In addition, the contrast of the lines, the forms, and color throughout the development of the art piece.

CHALLENGES AND ADVANTAGES
CHALLENGES: The first challenge that I face through the development of this art work was the kind of designs and sketches I wanted to elaborate to put in each of the little ovals in the canvas. Also the types of colors that I was going to elaborate by mixing and blending around the ovals, and through each of the squares around the ovals. At the same time, I didn't know what kind of techniques I wanted to use and in what parts of the art piece I was going to use them. I was very concern about its look because I wanted a close connection with the stain glass and that I was going to be able to demonstrate the a similar view of how a stain glass would look like. Other challenge was the use of the brushes in little places and to outline the lines that separated the different colors around the oval and also from the little picture in the middle of the oval as well. Another challenge would be my not secure perception of what I really wanted to do in the canvas, either outline the little paintings inside the ovals or not. My last challenge was that I wasn't kind of happy with the result on this specific art piece because of the low resemblance to a stain glass art work.
|
ADVANTAGES: An advantage would be, when it came to think about different types of ideas for this second project, I already had this idea in mind already to be develop. Also when it came for the design that I was going to elaborate in the canvas, the figure that I was going to develop to make sure it would be a good figure to have so that the painting that I was going to elaborate would fit correctly and it would look good by being in the canvas as well. At the same time, on the part that I was painting the colors on the second oval in the canvas, I was proceeding to match the colors on the squares, and made some changes in those colors which made more the oval as a whole and the little painting in the middle highlight more in the canvas too. Also the middle painting of a landscape was the one that I like the most because of the colors use and how the colors were giving the painting a sensible, calming, and intriguing feeling. The brush that I use on this part, I felt very good when I was using it because I was actually doing a technique that I really liked to do and when it came to blend the colors in certain parts of the paintings each time I did it, it was actually very easy and fascinating for me because I was able to develop a good job towards the design and what i wanted this second painting to look like. However, the result of the painting as a whole wasn't what I expected to be, but I did like it kind of, because of the effect that the dark background does to the three little paintings and how it does highlight more the colors.

THE MEANING BEHIND MY PIECE
The meaning behind my piece is that by this piece being connected to the art of stain glass, and how the designs and the message that are being transmitted through the stain glass sometimes is like each stain glass piece is telling a story in particular. For this art piece, the meaning is emphasizing the the little material or not material things that happen to be very important throughout our lives, as a picture, a drawing, or a simple object that is able to tell a story, a significant story of out lives which happens to influence how we see the world and in what ways does it affect our own memory and the person that we are today. This was also inspired by how in TOK class we talk about ways of knowing and how it relates to the diverse experiences that we have been experiencing throughout our lives that provide us with knowledge and the increment towards our memory and perception of life.
REFLECTION
Throughout my research and inspiration while I was elaborating this piece, I didn't expect to have a little trouble with the techniques that I was using throughout the painting. Also how some of the painting that I had was to thick so it was kind of hard to blend with other paintings. At the same time there were some other paintings that were very liquid and when I apply them to the canvas it was kind of hard because I need it to add two or three times the same painting on the parts that I was putting it because it look a little bit of too transparent in the canvas and in the place where I would apply it. In the other hand, the comments that I receive from other paintings, other perspectives towards my paintings, other than my own one were very useful for me because I was able to make changes that would look better in the little paintings, as choosing darker and more brighter colors in the square of the ovals that surrounded the little paintings. Also the kinds of inspirations that I was able to recollect to maintain an equivalent amount of connection with the stain glass art works that I was looking through my research, and how some connected with the art movements that I thought they were good to express and resemble the message that my piece wanted to communicate, as the stain glass that they tell a story.

ACT QUESTIONS
1. The relationship between my inspirations and my artwork, were the demonstration of the elaboration of how our story of our live is being written and being seen which is been elaborated through each part of the piece. Which affect my piece to be more created with nature and at the same time with things that show part of my own surroundings and how they make an impact in our lives, as how Lorenzo Monaco and Pablo Picasso express on their artwork.
2. The overall point of view by the authors from the elaborated research, were that they were trying to reflect towards the things that surround them and how do this type of things affect their own view of the world. Which later they would give a more meaningful meaning, that would have different types of point of view depending on the things as culture, feelings, and characteristics that they wanted to show.
3. The generalizations and conclusions that I discovered were, that people try to just focus on particular material things that makes them who they are and forgetting about the non material things that makes them be part of their own growth as a person. Also it would depend on how people view it and apply it in their life and show it to the world, as Lorenzo Monaco and Pablo Picasso and did through their paintings.
4. My central idea for my inspirational research was religion, because I wanted to show how many of the religions use this type of techniques to tell their stories of their own believes. Also that how my main idea give me the interest to research about the stained glass, which is very interesting and very creative to demonstrate the diverse perspectives and believes around the world.
5. The conclusion that I reach base on reading the research that I elaborated for this project, was that behind each of the developments, for each of the artworks made by the artists (Picasso and Monaco), there was a connection between both on them regarding their expressions. In the research, I encounter information that was related to each of the artists, that were about the inspirations, what they wanted to demonstrate, point of view, and art movements, which this characteristics from both. So I concluded that both artist were connected because of their illustration about a typical day in a life of a person and how significant regular things are to daily life.
