FLAG DESIGN
Title: Milwaukee Flag Design
Size: 43.7 x 24.8 cm November 2015 Exhibit Text: This is the flag I created to represent Milwaukee and symbolizes the Art museum, the lake, industry, and the Rockwell tower that are part of what makes Milwaukee. I created this flag using the program Paint and I self made it by searching and combining diverse ideas. I was inspired by Robert Indiana because of the colors and the shapes that he would add to his work. |
ARTIST INSPIRATION
For my flag at first was kind of hard to find an artist that would inspired me to create something that would symbolize Milwaukee and his beauty, with this thoughts on my mind I later found and artist that inspired my to develop the designs on my flag. The artist that inspired me to develop it was Robert Indiana, because of the way he would develop his art work and how diverse and create he was with each of his pieces. Also His way on manipulating the colors in each piece and the different figures, shapes, and objects that he would add to each of his art pieces would make then unique. At the same time his unique way to look at things and make them innovative to the eye of the viewer, but also another thing that make me be inspired by Robert Indiana was how he mix and match colors that would look good together in his different art works. Additionally, how Robert Indiana would apply different types of perspectives on each of his pieces, as to make it part of him. This kind of characteristics that this artist apply to his work, inspired me to design a flag that would have a meaning behind it, different types of colors, shapes and views ( as how Milwaukee is base of). With this I was able to design the flag that would tell a story behind it of what Milwaukee is about, his art, his history.
ART PIECE INSPIRATION
Robert Indiana
(WHITE/RED/BLUE)
Oil on Canvas
61 x 61 cm
I was inspired by this art piece by Robert Indiana because how he was able to create different types of shapes and forms that would have a meaning behind it when we see it in front of us. This piece had a lot of colors that would have a meaning behind it and additionally different kinds of perspectives, ideas and thoughts that were put together to create this art piece. Also how he match the colors up and develop a way to introduce and make people analyze his painting. This kind of things made me inspired because how the shapes that are apply to the art work makes the art work rare and innovative at the same time, but also it make me apply different kinds of shapes to represent many things that make up what Milwaukee is base of.
CULTURE INSPIRATION
To develop the flag design I was inspired but I also connected it with the Milwaukee culture, because of how the flag was talking about Milwaukee and what the city represent it. Also how diverse the Milwaukee culture is because of the different races, perspectives, point of views and ways that Milwaukee is unique. The Milwaukee culture introduce us to a world that is base of his history, his art, and how the city became what is now. How in this culture people appreciate the art and his different kinds that we see in the Milwaukee art museum, the lake that goes through the middle of the city and connects to the big lakes, that let the culture be celebrated to extend that we are able to identify and be part of it, but also to making it better from what it is and what part of the city reflects in this culture and what is base of.

PROCESS & IDEAS
SKETCHES
PROCESS AND RESEARCH
1. I was focusing on making my flag simple and without any writing
2. Be able to symbolize Milwaukee through the flag
3. To demonstrate and be able to show the different parts of Milwaukee (as the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Rockwell Tower)
4. Apply Milwaukee's history
5. Add to the flag symbols that would be able to demonstrate important things as the lakes, agriculture and industrialism as well
2. Be able to symbolize Milwaukee through the flag

CHALLENGES AND ADVANTAGES

Throughout the elaboration of this art work, I experience many challenges while elaborating the flag ( my final idea to put as a flag, to represent Milwaukee). The challenge that I face was what I was going to research for first because at first I did not have any Idea of what to add or create for the flag. Then another challenge that I went through was to choose which types of objects, structures, sculptures, art works, etc would be good to add into the flag. A second challenge that I face was while creating the different sketches for the different ideas that I had in mind to develop, this part was hard because at first I really did not know what to put together, how would I change a symbol into something more simple. Other type of challenge that I was dealing with was choosing the colors that I was going to apply to each of the shapes on the flag and at the same time thinking about their meaning in Milwaukee and put the color according to it. A third type of challenge that I face while elaborating the flag was using paint because for me it was really hard to work with it. By how at first I wasn't able to create lines that had curves on them for the part of the art museum and the top of the M for Milwaukee. Also how the manage to develop the different shapes as the circle. the circle for me was pretty challenging because I wasn't able to put it on the space that I wanted the circle to be and cut it up to the middle to make half a circle to develop the gear that would be in between the representation of the art museum. While I was doing the gear it was kind of hard because it was hard to make the square around the circles using the lines provided by paint because the square that paint provided did not work us much to create it.

During the elaboration of the flag, I experience different kinds if advantages while I was completing the flag that would represent Milwaukee. The first advantage that I face was that I able to connect the symbols in each of the flags, after the first flags ( that were kinds of challenging to think about), I was later for me easier to connected to the city of Milwaukee and what kind of things makes Milwaukee a grate city. Other type of advantage that I was facing was that with the comments and advises of one of the professors that came from MIAD, to the art class, I was able to elaborate better ideas for my sketches and I could manage to organize better my thoughts and ideas over the different topics that I had in mind. As how I was able to incorporate more than one structure or object that are part of Milwaukee into the flag. Another advantage that I face was working with paint after multiple trials ( working with paint for me was pretty challenging to do, because I decided to use it to create my flag). The thing that I was pretty good at was when I need it to do straight lines and sometimes it was easier to color the different shapes and their areas ( but I needed to be careful because sometimes I was to close to another line and I would make everything with the same color or the line wasn't connected completely and the color that I use would pass to other parts). While doing the clocks that are in my flag, the process was pretty easy because at that point I was able to do better circles and the straight lines as well. The last advantage that I face was that I like the results from the last details that I made to the flag, the colors and the shapes ( and in my opinion), the flag looks really good from what I did start with at the begging of making it ( when I did not have any clue of what I was going to make). The flag for me has good meaning behind it and represents some parts that makes Milwaukee interesting and unique.

THE MEANING BEHIND MY PIECE
The meaning behind my piece is that I wanted to represent the many things (building, structures. historic part) that makes the city of Milwaukee special, interesting, mysterious, and unique in her own way. In the other had, I wanted also to keep in my flag design a way that people would identify themselves with my art work because in the city of Milwaukee were have a variety of cultures and things that would makes us part of Milwaukee and why do we liked it so much. Also I wanted to express on my art work the different perspectives that are found in Milwaukee, as the art perspective that we would find it in the Milwaukee Art Museum (found of the top of the representation of what is the Rockwell tower in my flag design), but also art at the same time represents culture, and this culture in Milwaukee is really enjoy it and see it by many people outside of Milwaukee and the people that live in Milwaukee too. In addition, the light blue wave parts in both sides of the flag represent the river that goes through the city and the darker blue in the background by how we are close to the big lakes. Also the gear that is in between the representation of the art museum, symbolizes the industrialism of the city back in the days until today. On this piece I just wanted to demonstrate the meany things that makes Milwaukee a grate city and to demonstrate things from her history.
REFLECTION OF MY WORK
The different ideas that I got to do to make my flag were the advises and comments through my process of my flag designs, the people that help me to go into the right track were my dad, my sister, my mom, my friends in art class, and the the teaches of MIAD that came add advise me on my flag designs. However, without their advises, comments, and points view of my sketches, ideas, process of making the flag, and the colors that I would apply to the different symbols made my way out of all the ideas that i had in my mind and then I could reflect and combine my ideas and thoughts on the flag into just one idea and develop something in multiple ways that then I finish my flag design with something that I really liked and was a good symbolization and way to express the city of Milwaukee ( in my opinion). On the other hand, at the beginning I thought that the process and the steps to make the flag were going to be easy and really fast to develop them. Also I thought that the ideas were going to come on my mind really easy and that I would have in no time a design for my flag, but I was wrong because the ideas to create the flag did not come that easily into my head, and there was research to do, but also connection and meaning that I needed to create base on the symbols and others objects that would be on the flag. Additionally, I had a little trouble making the flag on paint ( this made the process even more challenging to make the flag) because I could not handle how to make a curve line and neither how I needed to a circle and make it into a gear that then I would put it in middle of the representation of what it was going to be the symbol for the art museum. Also the influences of artist like Robert Indiana made my way through the process more easy to understand and complete it. Later with a little of a practice I manage to work with paint I handle it to make the flag that I wanted to express as my art work and to represent the city of Milwaukee.
