SACRED VESSEL
TITLE: Naturally MEDIUM: Clay, paint, leaves, glass, paper, and cardboard SIZE: 45 cm x 23 cm MARCH 2016 EXHIBITION TEXT: I created this piece by being influence by symbolism and surrealism because of its shape and meaning. Also by being influence by Bernini and applying some of his style in my clay piece. Which has an emphasis on the meaning behind it that which focuses on the preservation of nature and symbolizes trust. |
ARTIST INSPIRATION
The artist that inspired me were Myron and Bernini, they inspired me to develop my clay piece for my sacred vessel project. How both artist have a unique technique, which makes each of them very special, by how they would develop each part of their clay projects, they forms, the lines that they would have apply to each part and what they wanted to say through their art work. In addition, how their techniques inspired me to develop the petals of the flowers, which were very delicate and the form of the flower itself. Both artist inspired me with their techniques and to go father with what I had plan at the beginning, when I was recreating and organizing my ideas to develop it.
ART MOVEMENT INSPIRATION
SURREALISM
I was inspired by this art movement because of how our own imagination, dreams and ideas develop things that pass our own view of life and the things that surrounds us, which gives us the inspiration to go through each little thing, as nature and trust with equilibrium. |
SYMBOLISM
I was inspired by this art movement, because of the symbolism that each part of the sculpture represents and how valuable each meaning has to share to the whole world. At the same time how in this art movement, what the artist wants to transmit, it can be understand in different ways and in different perspectives. |
ARTWORK INSPIRATION
CULTURE INSPIRATION
Marriage Culture
I choose this culture because it had kind of the representation of what I was trying to say through my art/clay piece. Which had to do with trust, and in my opinion, in a marriage there is gonna be a lot of trust between the two people that are in that committed relationship. So how they need to secure and take care of the trust that each other has for each other throughout each thing that happens in their lives. |
MATERIALS
SKETCHES
PROCESS
- I created the clay in the pug mill by mixing hard and really soft clay.
- Then I took a wood board and began to wedge the clay that I just made, so when I create the piece and fire it it doesn't explode.
- Then I took half of the clay and made the base of the flower (that was a circle), and then I took the other half of the clay and put it on the slap roller and flat it up, and from it I made up the petals of the flowers.
- Then I put the petals on the base and I was developing it, in the form of a flower with the help water and other clay tools.
- The flower was fired up. and after it fired up, I brought it home and took a box and covered it with a bright grey paper
- Also I took a bowl made out of glass and paste fake leaves on it
- I took the flower and painted with gold, black and white colors
- After drying up, I paste the flower on top of the box and then I paste and put the glass on top and then decorated with leaves surrounding it.
CHALLENGES AND ADVANTAGES
CHALLENGES:
During the elaboration of the Secred Vessel piece I went through different types of challenges, which sometimes give a really bad time doing something either from the clay piece of the object that I wanted to add to the sculpture and how it would look. One of the first challenges that I face was by doing the clay in the pug mill, which was kind of hard because to make good clay I needed to mix up half of mushy clay and the other half of kind of hard clay which the perfect combination for the development of the clay that I needed to use for the clay piece in the project. Another challenge that I face, was doing the middle part of the flower that was my clay piece, it was kind of hard to make because I would go to a point which I saw and thought that I had a great circular shape but when I would turn it, the other side wouldn't have the same shape so I still needed to shaped so they would be equally alike. Also another challenge was when I was trying to shape and cut from the clay the petals pieces for the flower but some of the came to little instead of the actual size that I wanted them to be. Also the shape and the details on the petals was a little bit of a long process because how I needed to smooth both sides, so the piece would look better. On the other part the development of the hands that I wanted put next to my piece were kind of hard to find, so I ended up graving latex gloves and putting concrete so the concrete would take the shape of the glove (as how the glove resembles the hand by how it looks) but sadly the concrete did not dry correctly and until now I have been looking it now and then and now it getting more hard than before when I did them almost at the middle of march. Also because I wanted to cover the piece with a glass piece, I could not find any type if a bigger piece in my house, so I need it to change the actual set up of how the piece would look like. On of the things that i would change would be the hands with plastic hands or something related and change kind of the way the flower look and the glass container if I can in the future. |
ADVANTAGES:
During the development of the Sacred Vessel piece, I went through different types of achievements which I was successful doing them. First, was the clay production in the pug mill because in two tries I was able to develop a good amount of clay to develop the piece. Also the usage of the usage of the slap roller was pretty easy for me to use, because when it was the demonstration to use it, I was kind of afraid that I would not do something right and I would mess up my piece and I would brake it or something in particular, but at the first try I was able to do it very easy and at the end the clay got flat and look great for its usage. Also when I was pasting the petals to the circular clay shape was easy because by doing cross hashing and applying a little bit of water the different pieces stay in their place and at the end when I was able to add all of the petals into the piece, I smooth it and the flower took the correct shape and resembles a flower, that was my first objective of the piece. Also I also add some little balls on the top that resemble the seeds or part of the flower (which was the sun flower) and the process of all of them went pretty smooth because at the end I made 53 balls to add to the flower. In addition, by doing all of the different types of details in all of the petals of the flower was really nice because they would come out very organize the designs develop a great look on the flower and at the same time it give the piece a smooth look. Also as how some of the petals broke but I was able to fire the completely up and at the end when it was ready to glue the pieces together and it ended up looking as it never broke apart. I wouldn't change how the flower look at the end because it ended up looking really nice and it had a connection with what I had in my mind for the meaning behind it. |
THE MEANING BEHIND MY PIECE
For this piece I had two meanings elaborated for it, one was that nature needs to be preserve because is disappearing very fast and we are the ones that are damaging it, so by the how the flower is cover by the galls bowl, its significance is that we need to preserve it and grow it more because we live from it and from it were are getting all the beautiful things that we live from. Also the second meaning is trust, this is because how trust is so delicate as a flower and is kind of cover around with glass and if someone just takes it so hard and not carefully it brakes down, so when trusting someone comes along is kind of special because trust is a really big part between people so their own relationship grows and is maintain as a pretty little flower that beatify and symbolizes trust.
REFLECTION
I was able to accomplish the final details by going through all the comments that a couple of friends and my family told me, that make me think of what would be the best way to incorporate each of the part that I create (the flower), the box, and the glass cover together, as how I wanted at the beginning. Throughout the whole process of making the peace, I have made different types of changes, because my mind changes, and more ideas came into my mind which had a better use each time of the materials that I was combining together. Also how I change my mind from the first idea that I had in mind, to what I ended up doing at the end. However, through the whole journey of elaboration of the piece, I had many types of challenges but at the same time I was able to have many advantages, which were great and bad, but they give me the push to go through the whole process and not stooping doing anything yet, just add my idea and all of it was going to develop itself in just no time.
