STUDIO #1
TITLE: Colorful Memories
MEDIUM: acrylic on canvas, textiles SIZE: 60.96 cm X 60.96 cm SEPTEMBER 2016 EXHIBIT TEXT:By being inspired by Dali's melting effect, van Gogh's painting techniques and O'Keeffe's flowers, I was able to elaborate a piece which would demonstrate the dreams and memories that have been bury in the past that were forgotten, are able to be achieve no matter how late or hard that will be to develop. |
ARTIST INSPIRATION
Throughout the development of my art piece which emphasizes artisan culture, which is base on dreams, memories, and imagination. By this I was inspired by three artists which had distinct types of techniques and art movements that they all used in their art pieces, along the way of their elaboration. The first artist that inspired me was Salvador Dali, because of his daydreaming paintings. Dali had demonstrated through his paintings of the importance of imagination and dreams that has applied to our own perspective and were transmitted through his art work. Therefore, most of his art pieces came from the use of futurism, cubism, surrealism , and also to promote courageous meanings through his work. He once stated that " the secret of my influence has always been that it remained secret" - Salvador Dali
The second artist that I was inspired by was Vincent van Gogh, because of how he was able to express his inner thoughts and feelings about the world. At the same time how in his many works, he would use poetic places that meant a lot to him as the "Garden with Courting Couples", which highlights the romantic conception of the area and the relationship between the couple. In addition, in his art works has demonstrated the different types of techniques as the use of small strokes of color and each would depend on the length of it. With this kinds of techniques, he is able to elaborate a radiant and a joyful effect in each one of his pieces. At the same time van Gogh was able to compare and contrast aspects on which were related to his own view of nature, his health, and things that made up his entire life as a whole, however, his aspects about love were very little because of his unhappy journey of experience in it but he would develop art work that emphasize the "what if" love would have been part of his life and would have been another option that would mean a lot for him. However, the use of realism is his work was also made up of daydreaming and other factors of imagination and intentions to be develop from the importance that is being given to the surroundings (just as Salvador Dali) and things that have a valuable factor in our lives. He as an artist was able to see through the object itself and capture the importance of the picture and express it through his own way in his work, as how a particular inspiration for him were the starts, which remains of the usage of dreams into our own work. As how he said "for my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the starts makes me dream".
Finally my third artist is Gorgia O'keefe, because of her focus on drawing flowers in canvas, and her rare paintings that would demonstrate her view about the world. By applying her flowers into my art work and mixing it up with other techniques and effects throughout the different art works from other impressive painters, there was a great connection between all three. This was basically, how the surrealism, the realism and the view of one self about the world was very interesting to apply it, towards the concept and meaning of the piece that I had in mind to do.

ART MOVEMENT INSPIRATION
SURREALISM
I decided to use and apply the art movement of surrealism towards this art piece in particular. For this piece I wanted to show the folklore and history throughout the development of this piece. Which demonstrates a little part of the story of when I come from and the story behind each design that was made specific for each of the artisan pieces. Although, through this piece I also wanted to use Salvador Dali techniques and his day dreaming usage throughout his paintings. This is because of how this houses are not seen that often anymore more from where I from, they still exist, but not in a lot of variety. So I just wanted to develop one that could demonstrate and be able to identify the importance of what the items of the house and the house as a whole symbolizes and means to me and to the world itself. |
REALISM
I wanted to apply the realism art movement towards this particular art piece as well. On this art piece I wanted to combine both the realistic and surrealistic movements, so that the art piece would emphasize the dreams and hopes that people would elaborate throughout their lives and maintaining them in their minds and heaths throughout the years. So by this, I wanted to show and use the different types of techniques that would make the art piece seem more realistic to the viewer eye. With this I was able to be particularly be inspired by Vincent van Gogh and Georgia O'Keeffe which are to impressive artist while doing realistic portraits of their surroundings and the things that surround us, like flowers and a diverse variety of landscapes. At the end by combining both, van Gogh's techniques , O'Keeffe's flowers, and Dali's melting style the piece that I was elaborating, I was able to finish it with all of this significant by being focus on the outstanding messages from the techniques use for its development. |
ARTWORK INSPIRATION
CULTURE INSPIRATION
Artisan Culture
Throughout the journey of putting together my whole art piece, I was inspired by the Artisan culture because of the different types of techniques that the people elaborate through their unique pieces, and how they are capable of emphasize the hidden meaning of the piece, but also used it as a symbol for the things that surround us. In addition, this culture catch my attention because it come from years of experience and is base of what they learn from the past generations. By this, this culture is really significant because it remains me of my culture, but also my theory of knowledge class by how all the theories that now we have in our era/century come from years and years of experience from the people that apply it and gain knowledge from what they experience and the knowledge that was share to them throughout the years. So this culture have a lot of significance towards the topics of history, traditions, emotions, and us, by being part of this unique and strange world. |
MATERIALS
The materials which I use to elaborate my art piece, were basically different types of brushes, which give me the help, so I could develop the distinguish types of techniques throughout the whole canvas. Also, for the paint, I use acrylic painting, and at the same time I was able to apply and show textiles in this piece. By the usage of some fabric flowers and other types of fabric for other parts in the canvas. This was because, I also wanted to show a more realistic view from my piece, so I added some extra 3D materials, that would then highlight the realistic part of the piece and at the same time, to make sure the objects would stand out in the art work.
PROCESS
The first thing that I did was to sketch the ideas that I had to develop for each of the house designs to paint into the canvas. Then I went to develop and put together the canvas that I was going to use for this project. For this part I needed to put for different sizes of sticks together and then put the raw cotton with staples and with the help of a hammer as well, and them apply gesso into it. The I let it dry to make sure I was able to apply the color to the background of the canvas. After I apply the violet color that I made out from mixing up, red, blue, brown, and a little bit of yellow and orange acrylics, I sketch with pencil the outline of the design that I choose to develop in the canvas. The I took a container where, I added red, orange and a little bit of brown, and use this color and apply it to the wall of the house design in the canvas, but then when the color dry up I was able to see that there wasn't a good balance between both colors, so I change the color to a lighter orange. By which made the house pop up more in the canvas, after that mixing it in other container, one with a little bit of brown and the other one with a little bit of white I was able to develop the highlights and the shadows for the house walls. Then I took those colors and apply them to elaborate the highlights and the shadows, the I took different types of browns which I mix them up with reds, blues, oranges, and yellows to develop all of the columns of the house, the surface where the flower vase were, part of the selling and the doors and windows of the house too. Then with the usage of the hot glue, I put together the bouquet of flowers with the petals of textile flowers which I apply and glue to the canvas. Then at the end with usage of red and yellow acrylic colors I was able to use it to elaborate the flowers/petals of flowers all around the house and covering around the background to make a great effect on the house, to make it stand out more and also make the flowers seem like meting down my living in some parts the double application pf paint into the canvas with a close technique to van Gogh's one and with O'Keeffe flower inspiration into it as well.
PLANING
By beginning this project I had many questions towards the types of colors that I needed to use, either for the background, the house, the details, the shadows and the highlights in the painting. Towards the determination of the process and testing different colors, missing them up and creating different types of colors and at the end I was able to kind of chose and apply them into the canvas.
Also how at the beginning, when I first started to apply a color which had more red color than the orange & yellow color that I wanted the house to have, because for the development of the house, I wanted the house to be elaborated , with warm colors. However, at the end by looking at the contrast that the red color of the house and the violet color of the background made, I wasn't very please to see it. So at the end I decided to change colors, so from the red of the hose to a light orange color, and in the background I was able to add and elaborate some flowers designs, which had some connections with the house colors (it was an inspiring and brainstorm talk/ conversation with my art teacher Mr.chad for the background part).

SKETCHES
CHALLENGES AND ADVANTAGES
CHALLENGES:
The challenges that I went through the development, of this are piece were; when it came for the time to think of what I was going to do, it was very difficult because I had too many ideas in my mind which didn't let me think right, from what I wanted to elaborate for the first project. Other type of challenge that I face was, the way I elaborated my first canvas because of how at the very end, when I finish and I took it to place it next to the wall and the row cotton from the canvas wasn't that tide so it seem kind of loose. So it got me kind of worry, that I need it to do the whole process all over again. (However, it was an advantage for me because when I added the gesso to the canvas and led it dry it was perfect to develop the painting), Another type of challenge that I went through was, when I added this type of red-orange dark color to the house, it did not contrast at all, with the background color of the canvas and for me there wasn't a good balance towards the piece as a whole. So then I decided to change the house color and apply something more vibrant and for the background then it was better that I would change or add something people with the violet color the piece seem very dark and didn't have a movement of colors. which would give to the piece it self life. In addition, at the very end for the elaboration of the flower designs on the background, were very challenging for myself because of how I wanted to apply to the flower the melting sensation that Dali would give to his works and at the same time the technique of van Gogh to painting them. This was particularly challenging by the way I needed to hold and move the brush throughout the flower development and the type of process I needed to do with each of them. |
ADVANTAGES:
The advantages that I face throughout the elaboration process of my art piece were; first of all, when I was elaborating the sketches and the planing for the process for the development of my art piece. The many ideas that I had for the different types of house that I wanted to express and apply it into the diverse types of designs. Also, the time when I began to sketch the design into the canvas, it was very successful because I did it in no matter of time, and when I finish I was able to begin painting the house, on top of the violet background that I was able to paint the background by mixing up the acrylic paintings that I had in mind for it, on the part that I was mixing up the paintings I was very successful as well. The colors that I was able to use to elaborate the violet for the background, were, red, brown, blue, and a little bit of orange and yellow as well. Throughout the process of this piece, I was very surprise because I was able to mix up the colors very well than last year and at the same time I was able to develop better types of techniques, when it came to the shadows and the highlights in the different parts of the painting and the canvas a whole. Another advantage, was when it came for the placement of the flower textiles into the canvas, I thought that it was going to be hard to put over the surface of the canvas, each of the flower petals with hot glue. There were even sometimes that I would burn myself, but at the end I was successful to place all the petals in the form of a flower bouquet. At the end for the last part, the flowers that I was elaborating on the canvas were very challenging for me, but at the end I was able to manage the technique and to apply each time better the design and technique of the flower through its whole process of elaboration. |
THE MEANING BEHIND MY PIECE
The meaning behind my piece is; the past memories or dreams that we left behind throughout our journey growing up, and by living them we as people, we are forgetting the beauty and the happiness of dreaming and having that type of enjoyment, that we felt only when we were little. So it seems that those dreams and memories and like the written story that is left forget it, at the very end of our minds and until we look at the past, we now know that sometimes we were to foolish to demonstrate to the world the person that we really wanted to be and be able to achieve those dreams to develop our own happiness, by remembering that nothing would be to late or too impossible to do.
REFLECTION
The time and work that I was able to put towards this project was a lot, because of the new types of techniques and new ways to challenge myself to do better, this time was very different than last year. However, this year I feel a little bit more confident about the art that I being able to elaborate, and how I also able to chose easily and with more knowledge the artist, art movement, and art pieces that grab my attention and inspired me to develop each unique piece. At the same time, I was very grateful to have a conversation with my art teacher, Mr.Chad because with his help I am able to organize my thoughts and ideas into just one and from it demonstrate and create the art piece that I wanted to do at that particular moment. Also, the comments and observations that I was receiving from my peers and family, were able to help as well for the development of this art piece. When it came to the application of techniques and the elaboration of the piece as a whole, the journey was better because I was more confident and analytical towards the process that I needed to apply this time.

ACT QUESTIONS
1. The relationship between my inspirations and my artwork, were the demonstration of the identity which were elaborated through each part of the piece. Which affect my piece to be more created with personal things and at the same time with things that show part of my culture and who I am, as how Salvador Dali, Vincent van Gogh and Gorgia O'Keeffe do on their artwork.
2. The overall point of view by the authors from the elaborated research, were that they were trying to reflect on simple things as a window, a boat, and a couple of different fruits. Which later they would give a more meaningful meaning, that would have different types of point of view depending on the things as culture, feelings, and characteristics that they wanted to show. So by it, regarding my inspiration, it shows how normal things as an sculpture or earrings can have multiple meanings base on the viewer and what the artist wanted to express.
3. The generalizations and conclusions that I discovered were, that people try to be more attach to their emotional and material things because they mean something important to them as time passes. Also by analyzing the inspirations that I choose, the ideas of a culture depends of how people view it and apply it in their life and show it to the world, as how Salvador Dali, Vincent van Gogh and Gorgia O'Keeffe did through their paintings. They show part of who they were and part of their own culture.
4. My central idea for my inspirational research was the world culture, because I wanted to show the beauty of each culture around the world. Also that how my main idea give me the interest to research about the customs, which are interesting and very creative demonstrating the amazing things that each of the cultures have in common and their uniqueness.
5. The conclusion that I reach base on reading the research that I elaborated for the still life part for my summer project, was that behind each of the development, for each of the artworks made by the artists (Dali, van Gogh and O'Keeffe), there was a connection between both on them regarding their expressions. In the research, I encounter information that was related to each of the artists, that were about the inspirations, what they wanted to demonstrate, point of view, and art movements, which this characteristics from both. So I concluded that both artist were connected because of their illustration about a typical day in a life of a person and how significant regular things are to daily life.
